What are dentures, and what are snap-on dentures?

Eating corn on the cob at the cookout instead of watching other people eat it. Dentures are removable false teeth, and snap-on dentures are the version that clips onto implants so they stay put.

In plain English

Dentures are false teeth on a gum-colored base that sits over your gums. You take them out to clean them ^1,2. They are made from acrylic, resin, nylon, metal and porcelain ¹. The kinds you will see on price lists:

• Full dentures. Replace every tooth in the upper or lower jaw. They rest on the gums, and the upper one uses the roof of the mouth for suction. Many people use adhesive ¹.
• Partial dentures. Replace some teeth. They have clasps that hook around the teeth you still have ¹.
• Immediate dentures. Fitted the same day your teeth are pulled, so you are never without teeth. They often need relining or replacing once the gums shrink and heal, up to a year later ^2,3.
• Snap-on dentures. Also called implant-retained dentures or overdentures. The denture clips onto dental implants (small posts in the jawbone), so it does not need glue and does not slip. You still take it out to clean it ^1,4.
• Fixed implant dentures. Screwed onto implants and not removable at home. This is what All-on-4 is ⁴.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

Regular dentures suit people missing most or all teeth who want the lowest-cost, non-surgical option, or who cannot have surgery ¹. NHS says it takes a few weeks to get used to them ².

Snap-on dentures suit people whose dentures slip, who want to eat and talk with more confidence, and who have enough bone for implants. If bone is thin, a graft can sometimes build it ⁴. The usual implant rules apply, so untreated gum disease, unmanaged diabetes and current smoking make implants a poor bet ⁵.

Regular dentures have one built-in problem. After teeth are lost, the jawbone shrinks, so dentures loosen over time and the face can sag ^1,2. Implants help slow that bone loss ⁴.

How it works, step by step

Regular dentures ^1,2:

1. Impressions. The dentist measures your mouth and takes molds or a digital scan.
2. Making. The lab builds a model, sets the teeth in wax, then makes the final denture. NHS says this usually takes a few weeks ².
3. Fitting and adjusting. Cleveland Clinic says it "usually takes several office visits" to get the fit right, and getting used to them takes weeks or sometimes months ¹.

Snap-on dentures ⁴:

1. Any extractions and bone grafts. If needed, you may heal for a few months before implants.
2. Implant surgery. The clinic decides how many implants from your scan; the sources we opened do not fix a number. Most people feel normal within a week.
3. Healing. Implants fuse to the bone in about three to six months, sometimes longer.
4. Impressions, then the denture is fitted with the clips.

Sources do not give a number of trips. For regular dentures, the several fitting visits can fit one trip if you stay long enough; ask how many days. For snap-on dentures, the denture cannot be clipped on until the implants have fused, so plan on a second trip. The clinic will tell you after an exam and X-rays.

What the price usually includes, and what can cost extra

Ask whether these are in or out:

• X-rays and the exam
• Extractions
• An immediate denture to wear while you heal, and the reline or replacement later
• The denture material and tooth quality
• For snap-on: the implants, the clips (attachments), and the denture itself, which are often three separate lines
• Bone grafts
• Adjustments in the first weeks
• Relines later on
• A second trip

What it costs

Questions to ask a clinic before you book

1. What exactly is in the quote? Extractions, the immediate denture, the final denture, relines?
2. For snap-on dentures, how many implants, which brand, and are the clips and the denture included?
3. How many visits and how many days do I need to stay?
4. What is the denture made of, and what are the teeth made of?
5. Is there a written warranty? Does it cover a cracked denture, a broken clip, a failed implant?
6. Who adjusts or relines it after I go home, and who pays?
7. Can I take my X-rays, scan and records home?
8. What happens if a denture tooth breaks on the plane home?

What can go wrong, and how to lower the risk

With regular dentures, the usual problems are slipping, gum soreness, and looseness as the jaw shrinks ^1,2. Cleveland Clinic gives a lifespan of seven to 10 years, with a reline every one to two years ¹. NHS says never wear them overnight unless your dentist tells you to ².

With snap-on dentures, the implant surgery carries risks of infection, nerve damage, injury to the mouth and a hole in the sinus lining ⁴. Later, peri-implantitis, an infection around an implant that destroys bone, is reported in 10% to more than 40% of cases depending on how it is measured ⁶. Cleveland Clinic says the implants can last a lifetime with good care, and the overdenture itself is replaced every 15 to 20 years ⁴.

To lower the risk, clean the denture at least twice a day, brush your gums and any implants, take removable dentures out at night, keep check-ups, do not smoke, and control diabetes ^1,2,4.
